I'm feeling depressed right now - I'm in the middle of the search for a new job.
I always wanted to work with videogames or movie costumes design, but right now I got expirience only as graphic designer, so it's kinda sad.
I cannot find any decent job offers and It's pissing me off
I just want to work with something interesting, like some magazine or game company. All I got is boring layouts for cosmetic brands and scumbag boss.
Am I asking too much?? ((((

I don't know what is near you... and this entry is old, but if I was you, I would look for companies that you like in those two fields you mentioned, video games and costume design. Find ones that are remotely near you. Ask them directly what you would need to get an entry level position or an internship.

The other thought is to make things specifically to build your portfolio, like for instance, do some video game designs for a fictional video game that you made up.

Goodluck!

XDll may be old but still *cough* heh.

Working in a videogame company... and believe me, it's not really easy. Loads and loads of work, my social life being almost non existent.... and also a boss that can't always control his temper.

But I guess I'm still happier especially about my colleagues, because they're lovely and creative people. Keeping my fingers crossed you'll be successful with your search

Keep your head up girl. I know exactly what you mean. It's definitely hard to find jobs that you actually want specially when it comes to what will make you happy. Just keep looking, and keep your head up. Have you looked into perhaps theatres around the area, or even schools looking for costume designers or set designers for things perhaps like that?

Something like that perhaps to last you for a bit maybe?

Well, It's complicated here, in Russia. To work with movies and such you need to know guy, who knows another guy, who have contacts...ect.
I'm searching online, but get no response )

Try contacting publishing companies about illustration jobs, or larger companies for marketing positions. Both of those deal heavily in graphic arts.

You should try to look for people making low budget movies to start with. Maybe film school grads or even students who might be in your area. People post stuff on sites like craigslist all the time for making movies. It would be worth getting hold of them (so long as they aren't making porn, unless they need kick ass costumes for their porn for some reason) and getting in with the props department. As for video game design you'd have to find a video game company that's looking for conceptual artists. They usually have employment opportunities listed on their websites, usually near the bottom of the main page. Good luck with your search.

Well, I know, this may sound totally lame, but I think you shouldn't give up :<
You're definitely not asking too much, if you wish for a job, which you really enjoy.
And this whole expirience thing is kinda tricky, since you get expirience from working in that job :x
If you got enough interest and a little bit of talent and eagerness, I think you are able to find a job, which deals with videogames or movie costume design. (And I'm kinda positiv you got enough interest, talent and eagerness :) )
So don't give up, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you ^^

Well, talking about it, if you aren't in the same situation is easy, isn't it? Still I hope it cheers you up a little bit that I wish you the best of luck :)

No you are not asking too much. I am also in the middle of work transition and basically looking around for the one job that may best fit my interest.

I think it is always important for people to work on something they are truly interested.

Have you tried to look for opportunities in other countries?

Best of luck.

It's hard to make yourself do work, that is boring or not interesting ( Too much stress.
No, I don't think Russians are welcome in other countries)))

as much as you may dislike a company or what a job has to offer... sometimes you gotta just suck it up and just take it.. building up your resume while gaining experience and preparing yourself for a bigger goal in the future will be worth the frustration ;) but regardless i wish for the best of luck!
